Growing up in small-town Tennessee, I hitched rides with friends to Nashville to consume culture, which meant rock shows, bookstores, and movies at the Belcourt Theatre. Good Intentions and Unintended Consequences of Emergency Procedures
Having emergency procedures have always been necessary for cinema and festival spaces, but recent events have expanded the types of emergencies these organizations should be considering. Building relationships with local police and fire departments is just one key element to a theater's emergency plan. How does an emergency plan affect an audience, volunteers, and staff? This panel will combine a discussion on the unintended consequences of emergency procedures, and a close look at a theater's emergency plan.

How To Be An Ally
How do film organizations create the most inclusive approach to building audiences? In this session, representatives of theaters, festivals, and distributors lead an open source, peer-to-peer exchange of experiences, hard questions, and case studies around inclusive film programming. All session attendees are invited to participate in addressing the power structures inherent to traditional film exhibition and distribution that inhibit social equity. We will share the questions we're wrestling with, successes, setbacks, and ideas for collective action. We will challenge ourselves to create more accessible and equitable programming, to reach wider audiences, and explore how adopting a racial equity lens in programming can contribute to undoing racism in the film industry.

Borrowing Archive Film Prints: A Field Guide for the Curious
Interested in borrowing archive prints, but not sure where to start? Archival prints offer unique opportunities to present your audience with rare films and titles they might not be able to see anywhere else, but the borrowing process can sometimes seem obscure. What do archives look for in a borrowing theater? What kind of equipment do you need, and how do you handle an archive print? This panel seeks to bridge knowledge gaps between exhibitors and archives to lower barriers to access and create a better borrowing and lending experience for all, bringing together archivists from major archives and studios to illuminate archival considerations in loaning prints and explore how theaters can expand their access to exciting and unique programming for their audiences.

Film Screening: FRANTZ

Following its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, Frantz has received acclaim at festivals worldwide. Esteemed French filmmaker Francois Ozon makes his Sundance Film Festival debut with this singular title.

Following World War I, Anna quietly mourns the death of her German soldier fiancé, Frantz. Her grief is ruptured when she witnesses a stranger, Adrien, laying flowers at her beloved’s grave. Desperate for a connection to Frantz, Anna casts aside her animosity toward Adrien’s French origins and envelops him into her life. She basks in the stories he unfolds of Frantz, and their friendship in Paris before the war. But when the true nature of his bond with Frantz is revealed, Adrien flees Germany, sending Anna on a journey to Paris after him.

Based loosely on Ernst Lubitsch’s 1932 film Broken LullabyFrantz is a profound look at the emotional devastation left in the tracks of war and the mechanisms humans grasp at while attempting to cope. Aided by a stunning performance from newcomer Paula Beer, Frantz resonates far beyond the confines of love and war.

Leonard Maltin will lead a talkback after this film.

The Happy Healthy Arts Leader:  Strategies for Impact without Burnout
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

The passion that people who work in the arts feel for their work is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, that fervor helps them keep going in the face of difficult challenges, especially in the early stages of their careers. On the other hand, they can be so driven they don’t stop to refuel or smell the proverbial roses or even notice they are experiencing symptoms of burnout. Based on their new book, The Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout (http://bit.ly/happyhealthynpbook), internationally acclaimed author and trainer Beth Kanter will present an interactive workshop where participants will:

  • Take a self-assessment to determine burnout symptoms and opportunities to create self-care habits

  • Share tips and methods for self-care activities that go beyond physical health

  • Share strategies for bringing a culture of wellbeing into your nonprofit workplace

Beyond the Digital Decade
The last 10 years has been dominated by the transition from celluloid to bits and bytes and by a vast increase in audience access to audiovisual content. The technical switch has been surprisingly calm but attention is now firmly on the potential of the D-Cinema Era in terms of cinemas, audiences and film itself. This panel explores some of the main currents of change and considers the range of challenges ahead, including:

Demand creation. Cinema remains the preeminent medium for creating demand for film and ensuring that it retains its rich diversity. But what are challenges to that position and how might they be tackled, particularly in relation to young audiences?

Enhanced Experiences. Cinemas are moving beyond their role as the ‘exhibition’ end of a long value chain. Most cinemas now run a wide variety of events, non-film programmes and educational services. What are the most promising trends and what might the cinema of 2027 look like?

On Demand and Trusted Curation. On-demand or curated content? The earliest stages of Video On Demand were all focused on volume – instant access to what we think we want. Now the emphasis is on a smaller choice of content, carefully selected, and sometimes produced, in conjunction with trusted curators. That would appear to play to the strengths on cinemas, so are there new opportunities in the on-demand world?

Engaging Latino Audiences at Art House Cinemas
The percentage of the U.S population who define themselves as Hispanic or Latino continues to increase, and Spanish-speakers make up a significant number of potential audience members. However, finding this audience is still a challenge for many art cinemas. It can even be difficult to engage our existing members who are fans of foreign cinema with films from Latin America and Spain. On this panel we will look at successful strategies, and obstacles, for expanding audiences, programming and events to better reflect our multicultural and multilingual society.

Show Me the Money! How to Talk Finances with your Staff and Public
We love talking about movies, but how do we talk about money at our Art Houses?  Do you share your finances with your staff?  With your members?  In how much detail?  You don’t publish salaries, do you? Do you publish an annual report?  At Renew Theaters, we have been wrestling with these questions.  This case study shows the steps we’ve taken to be more financially transparent – to both our staff and our members - and the issues that have arisen in doing so.

Cinema is Dead. Long Live Cinema: Next Steps
To read the press, a combination of technological changes, new business models, changing viewing habits, must see TV and generation change is a perfect storm that is threatening the existence of theatrical exhibition. Yet, according to our surveys, attendance is increasing in art film venues, even as studio films are more hit and miss than ever. These sessions will analyze current trends and explore the factors that set art film theaters apart, with a particular focus on local marketing and curation. Presenting: Science on Screen

The Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Science on Screen® series has expanded film and scientific literacy with this popular program, now in its 12th year. Last year, 23 grants were awarded to art house cinemas and nonprofit organizations nationwide to create Science on Screen programs in their own communities. Through generous funding support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Coolidge will once again extend this grant opportunity (awarding funds of up to $8,500 per theater) to Convergence participants. Join Coolidge staff, select grantees, and a representative from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for a discussion of program ideas and past success stories, and to learn more about the grant application process.
